Nestled in the heart of sunny Carmel Valley with the Santa Lucia Mountains as a picturesque backdrop, Bernardus Lodge opened in August 1999 as a romantic retreat for couples seeking a relaxing getaway in one of California’s finest wine growing regions. Founded by winemaker and bon-vivant Bernardus Pon, the resort resembles a classic European country inn featuring 57 suites, a luxurious spa, an award-winning signature restaurant, a wedding pavilion, private event space and its own Bernardus Winery and Vineyard.

The romantic ambiance of the Lodge’s sumptuous guestrooms makes room service a popular choice for guests as well. Poolside dining is also available. Special holiday feasts, such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, are offered at both dining venues. Chef Stamenov has also created a series of inspired cooking classes, food and wine seminars and weekend culinary getaways that combine the beauty and bounty of the region.
Upon arrival to Bernardus Lodge, guests are greeted with a glass of wine and invited to relax in a double “parlor” furnished with comfortable spring and down-filled sofas and chairs. In place of a traditional counter and check-in routine, a concierge reviews schedules and itineraries while escorting guests on a tour of the property. The main lodge resembles a French country home, decorated with warm, earthy tones including terra cotta, bittersweet chocolate, ochre and celadon. Hand-plastered walls glazed in rich ochre, rustic heavy-beams, antique wrought iron and copper chandeliers, and limestone fireplaces are informal and inviting.
The resort’s luxurious suites are situated in nine, single and two-story adobe village-style buildings ranging in size from 525 to 1875 square feet nestled along a terraced hillside. Stone wood-burning fireplaces serve as the focal point of the sumptuous deluxe king and junior king suites, designed with vaulted beamed ceilings and built-in wine grottos with a different tasting of wine and cheese on the first night at turndown; complimentary in-room wine and gourmet snack pantries; and fresh flowers. Arched windows and French doors open onto spacious private decks with spectacular mountain vistas.
Special design touches and amenities include antique English armoires with aviary wire doors for clothing; king beds with high wood headboards, feather beds; down comforters with matelassé coverlets and Italian linens; comfortable furnishings in aesthetically pleasing rich wood finishes; and spacious bathrooms with large, two-person tubs, separate showers, and double vanities.
Standard amenities in each guestroom include remote cable television, CD player, coffee maker, tea service, plush robe and slippers, hair dryer and in-room safe. The overall effect provides an ambiance in which guests can relax in both luxury and comfort.
Between the buildings, richly landscaped gardens and courtyards accented with outdoor fireplaces, fountains and stone benches create intimate spaces.
The Lodge is 120 miles south of San Francisco and 330 miles north of Los Angeles. Bernardus Lodge is easily accessible by air. It is a 20-minute drive from the Monterey Peninsula and its wealth of attractions. The property is one and a half-hour drive from the San Jose Airport. Carmel-by-the-Sea is just 15 minutes away.

The Central Coast provides him the access to an inspiring range of ingredients whose terroir is appreciable in every bite. These come to him by way of the relationships he has forged with the local growers, fisherman and foragers. Marinus at Bernardus Lodge
Marinus’ old world charm can be enjoyed either indoors or al fresco. Spectacular garden and mountain views embellish cocktail hour on the outdoor terrace in the summer months, while the restaurant’s striking 12-foot-wide stone fireplace warms guests indoors in cooler weather.
In addition to the dining room, the Wine Cellar provides a private space, where parties of up to 8, can indulge in personalized tasting menus amongst the extensive 35,000 bottle collection. Guests can also dine at the Chef’s Table, a unique venue located in the heart of the kitchen where the energy, split second timing, and creative artistry becomes a theatre to watch and enjoy.
Marinus’ signature dishes include Monterey Bay Red Abalone prepared with a tonka bean crust, white asparagus, candy cap mushroom, and bergamot mousseline; Bacon & Egg with soft poached duck egg, duck prosciutto, and black truffle; and Meyer Lemon with poached meringue, lemon cream cannoli, pistachio, meyer lemon sorbet.
Marinus at Bernardus Lodge has been enjoying high praise since the resort opened in 1999, and has won Wine Spectator magazine’s highly coveted “Grand Award” for its wine cellar since 2001. Since 1981, only 89 restaurants from 12 countries have earned the Grand Award, an honor bestowed every three years. The cellar houses 1,850 different wines and a total of more than 35,000 premium bottles, including 10,000 bottles from the affiliated Bernardus Winery & Vineyard near the resort. Wickets Bistro offers more casual fare and provides outdoor seating to make the most of the mild Carmel Valley climate. Al fresco dining takes place under a trellis that looks out on the resort’s manicured croquet lawn & bocce court. The adjacent stone fireplace creates a stunning ambiance, perfect for an evening nightcap, light meal, libations or late night fare. The dining room is accentuated by photographs and mementos of Lodge creator, Holland native, Bernardus Pon’s Olympic and racecar driving feats.
The all day menu allows guests to enjoy such savory bistro classics as House Smoked Salmon Salad with butter lettuce, avocado and crème fraîche; Steak Tartare with garden greens and pommes frites; and Duck Burger with California foie gras and current mustard. Chef Cal Stamenov draws inspiration from the local organic farms and fresh catches from the Monterey coastline when creating each day’s seasonal menu additions and chef’s 3-course prix-fixe menus.
Wickets Bistro offers an international wine list focused around Chef Cal’s bistro cuisine with a bold selection of half bottles, over 20 wines by the glass and wine flights from Bernardus Winery. The cocktail list fuses traditional and modern favorites and is dictated by the seasonality of the local organic fruit and herbs from the Chefs Garden. The cocktail list is unique in ingredients and in character for example; The Wellbeing Martini, made with Domaine Charbay Green Tea Vodka, Zen Green Tea Liquor, Meyer Lemon and Lemon Verbena leaves and the Satsuma Cosmo made with Skyy 90, Patron Citronage, cranberry juice and fresh satsuma mandarin.
Wickets Bistro is open daily for breakfast, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and offers an all day dinning menu and Chef’s 3-course prix-fix menu from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The full bar is available in the lobby lounge which features a live classical pianist on selected evenings.

For guests seeking a more casual atmosphere, the resort also offers Wickets Bistro, a cozy venue perfect for a casual meal or beverage. Guests can dine indoors, where memorabilia from Holland native Pon’s racecar driving and Olympic feats are on display, or outdoors under an expansive trellis overlooking the resorts croquet lawn.

Bernardus Lodge can accommodate groups of 10 to 200 for retreats, meetings and special events with more than 4,000 square feet of indoor flexible meeting and banquet space and 5,000 square feet of beautifully landscaped outdoor space. Each of the resort’s four function rooms is distinctive and offers diverse layouts and meeting facilities. The 2,160-square-foot Meritage Ballroom can seat up to 150 and is perfect for weddings and banquets. Harvest Room can seat up to 50 people and includes a demonstration kitchen ideal for culinary and viticultural education or an exhibition dinner and wine tasting. The 450-square-foot Semillon Suite attaches to two deluxe guest rooms and seats up to 14 people, including a professional kitchen, flat screen television, and outdoor terrace, perfect for board meetings or as a hospitality area. Magnum Boardroom is a 288-square-foot venue, with a round walnut table and plush chairs, ideal for a formal meeting or dinner for up to 12 people.
Group dining options include Marinus and the off-site Wills Fargo Dining House & Saloon, located in nearby Carmel Valley Village, also operated by the resort.
For wedding ceremonies and outdoor cocktail receptions, Bernardus Lodge offers a two-acre landscaped garden setting. The Meritage Ballroom is an ideal space for more formal wedding banquets with seating for up to 150 guests. A maximum of one wedding is held at the resort per day. Offsite catering and a professional catering consultant are available for private parties and dinner.

The spa and salon are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday thru Thursday with services starting from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday spa hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with services beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m. Some spa services are available in-room. The fitness room is open 24 hours a day.

The Viennese Hotelier Anton Schneider acquires the premises where the Grand Hotel stands today. A maison meublée (furnished house) is built according to the plans of the renowned architect Carl Tietz which is then turned into a hotel. The Grand Hotel is opened on May 10th 1870 as the first Grand Hotel in Vienna. The hotel offers 300 rooms, 200 bathrooms, steam elevators and a telegraph office.
“The Erste Wiener Hotel Aktien Gesellschaft” is established. The share-holders of this company are the owners of the Grand Hotel. The first general meeting is held on June 1st 1870 in the ballroom of the Grand Hotel. In summer, Anton Schneider decides to retire from his position as hotel director of the Grand Hotel. The public company appoints Mr. Franz Sommer as the new general manager. 1894 Johann Strauss ( The king of Waltz) celebrates his 50-year jubilee on stage in the Grand Hotel.
The Grand Hotel reaches its largest expansion. Two of the neighboring houses, Kärntner Ring 11 & 13, are acquired and after extensive renovations the buildings are joined together. Thereafter, the hotel is able to offer 100 additional rooms and several, elegant salons.
All rooms are equipped with a telephone.
During 10 years, the Russian Troops live in the Grand Hotel.
